La presente obra, de carácter didáctico y conciso, está dedicada al abordaje integral de las tensiones o contracturas musculares a través de las terapias manuales. Esta técnica se fundamenta sobre el concepto de terapias manuales ampliamente difundido en la medicina manual, en osteopatía y en kinesioterapia. Tras una breve introducción en la que se explican la hipertonía muscular y la técnica de liberación de tensiones, cada uno de nueve capítulos del libro se centra en una región del cuerpo (cuello, tórax, hombro, codo, muñeca y mano, región abdomino-lumbar, cadera, rodilla, tobillo y pie) adoptando siempre la siguiente estructura: acción muscular en situación de función, búsqueda palpatoria de la contractura, interpretación del balance palpatorio y diagnóstico, y tratamiento de la contractura. Se examinan así tres de las grandes regiones del cuerpo: cuello y tronco, miembro superior y miembro inferior. Para cada región, los autores ofrecen une introducción regional, y para cada capítulo une introducción local. A lo largo del libro se incluyen 462 fotografías realizadas en situación. Cada fotografía viene acompañada por un texto con una detallada leyenda en el que se explica el tratamiento etapa por etapa (pruebas y estiramientos). Para ilustrar la biomecánica, se han introducido asimismo una serie de croquis para aclarar conceptos. Tanto el Prof. G. Peninou como el Prof. S. Tixa son reconocidos profesionales y docentes que participan regularmente en diversos seminarios en España (el Prof. Tixa, muy conocido en España, imparte cursos regularmente en las Escuelas de Fisioterapia de Barcelona y Zaragoza). Se trata de un manual de referencia para la práctica cotidiana, de gran interés tanto para estudiantes como para profesionales de esta disciplina.
